Good Morning Sargent Community!

We hope that everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather!  This week, Sargent is hosting an Incoming 1st Grade Parent Information Night on Thursday, May 23rd at 6:00 pm.  This meeting is for parents only. Additionally, please sign up for Breakfast Buddies if you haven't already!  Breakfast Buddies will run from Monday, June 3rd, to Thursday June 6th.

Breakfast Buddies!

Save the Date for our annual Breakfast Buddies week!  Breakfast Buddies will take place from Monday, June 3rd, to Thursday, June 6th.  Parents, grandparents, and siblings are invited to join their student(s) before school for coffee, hot chocolate, juice, bagels, donuts and fruit in the Sargent cafeteria!  This event is always a hit as the kids really enjoy having breakfast with their families before they begin their school day! Each grade will have their own morning (although you are welcome to come on ANY day), with the exception of 4th and 5th grade, which will be combined on Tuesday, June 4th.  
Please register your family for Breakfast Buddies on this form.

Mon. June 3rd: 2nd grade
Tues. June 4th: 4/5 grades
Weds. June 5th: 3rd grade
Thurs. June 6th:  1st grade

The PTO does need help with picking up the food and coffee, set up, serving, and clean up on all 4 mornings.

Pristash Award
Congratulations to our very own Mrs. Kristina Murray for being one of the 2019 recipients of the Pristash Award!  This award is presented annually to volunteers who have demonstrated an unselfish commitment to the North Andover Public Schools.  No one deserved this award more than Kris and we could not be more proud, and appreciative of her!  She truly makes the Sargent School a better place to be.  Thank you for all you do, Mrs. Murray!

This year's Pristash recipients will be honored at the School Committee Meeting on May 23rd, 2019, to be held at 7 pm at the School Administration Office, 566 Main St.  All are welcome to attend. Donations to the Pristash Scholarship, which honors a North Andover High School student who demonstrates a commitment to service and community, are always welcome and accepted.  Donations should be mailed to Amy Mastromonaco at 222 Bradford Street, North Andover, MA 01845. Checks should be made payable to NASF (North Andover Scholarship Foundation). 


End of Year 5th Grade Information!
It’s hard to believe that the school year is coming to a close and that our 5th graders will be moving on to the middle school! Celebrating this milestone has become a tradition at Sargent, and the 5th Grade Committee is pleased to provide Brooks Day, 5th Grade T-shirts, Memory Books, and Pizza Day at no cost to Sargent 5th Graders with funds raised over the course of the school year.  Below are some important dates!

Wednesday, June 5th: Academic Night - "An Evening of Poetry & Song" from 6:00 to 7:00.  Followed by a slideshow of their years at Sargent.

Tuesday, June 11th: Move up Day (students only) - The students will go to NAMS to meet their 6th grade teachers during the school day.  Parents go that night to meet your students' teachers.  Information will come home from NAMS.

Tuesday, June 11th: Memory Book - All 5th graders will receive a complimentary 5th Grade Memory Book and pen. 

Wednesday, June 12th: T-shirt Hand Out - All 5th graders will receive a complimentary t-shirt which we encourage them to wear on Brooks Day.

Thursday, June 13th: Brooks Day (all day event) - Electronic Permission Slip must be completed online and a signed hard copy of the NAPS District Consent Form (will be sent home on 5/20) and must be turned in by 5/31/19.  Please read the Brooks Day Attendee Information Form with your child so they know the rules for the day.

Many volunteers are needed to make Brook’s Day run smoothly.  Please consider taking a shift (or two) or lending us one of the items needed for the day.  All volunteers must have an up-to-date Cori form.  To sign up, please go to Brooks Volunteers. 

Friday, June 14th: Pizza Day - Lunch is provide to the 5th grade students and staff.  

Wednesday, June 19th: Clap Out - 

What is the 5th Grade Clap Out?

The Sargent 5th grade Clap Out happens on the last day of school, in the morning. It is a fun way for our 5th graders to receive a final cheer (clap) from their former teachers and classmates. It is an opportunity to be acknowledged by our school community during a 15 minute walk through the halls of Sargent to music piped over the PA system. The 5th graders especially look forward to the end of the Clap Out, as it marks a special time in their classrooms to sign each other's Memory books and celebrate the kick-off of summer before dismissal at 11:50.  Parents have enjoyed seeing their child walk through the Clap Out portion of the day, in the gym, which takes approximately 10 minutes. This is completely optional for parents to attend.  Afterward, students will be looking to celebrate in their classrooms as a final goodbye with their teachers and classmates before dismissal!

Move Up Day, T-Shirt Day, Pizza Lunch, and Memory Book are for 5th grade students only, the 5th Grade Committee will reach out to room parents if volunteers are needed.

Box Tops Update
Boxtops will be moving to a digital platform and will be rolling out a brand new app in June.  Please continue to clip your Box Tops until they go digital! Additionally, PLEASE check expiration dates!  We have received many expired Box Tops. A full listing of products that contain Box Tops can be found here.  Keep up the great work! 

Stop and Shop A+ School Rewards
Thank you to those who registered their Stop and Shop Cards and participated in this program for the 2018-2019 school year! We earned $2106.15!! This is terrific! The program has now ended for the year and will resume in September. CURRENT supporters DO NOT need to re-register their Stop & Shop Card in September. NEW supporters DO need to register their Stop & Shop Card via their personal online account. Thank you again- every little bit counts!

New!  Trustees of the Reservations Early-Release Day Program at the Stevens-Coolidge Place!
The Trustees of the Reservations are hosting two drop-off days at the Stevens-Coolidge House in North Andover for children ages 6-9.  These dates will coincide with NAPS early release days of May 8th and 22nd.  Learn all about plant lifecycles, compost, and planting flowers!  For all details, please click here for the flyer.

Sargent School Drop Off/Pick Up Procedure 
Our main goal is to safely and efficiently welcome and dismiss all of our students daily. Thank you all in advance for your efforts.  Please click here to view the map.

Drop Off 
  • Please use Johnson Street (not Abbot St.) to enter and exit the school. There is NO entering or exiting from Abbott Street between 8:00 - 8:30 am. 
  • Drop off time begins at 8:10 am. Please do not drop students off before 8:10 AM as there is no supervision before that time. 
  • Pull your car all the way up as far as you can go before dropping your child. 
  • DO NOT PASS cars in line at drop off. Please wait until the car in front of you moves forward 
  • Students should exit from the passenger side only. 
  • Please note there is NO parking on Abbott Street at any time. 
  • There is no parking in handicap spots. 
Pick Up 
  • Please use Johnson Street (not Abbott St.) to enter and exit the school. There is NO entering or exiting from Abbott Street between 2:35 - 3:10 pm. 
  • All cars must have a Sargent issued name placard visible. If you do not have one you will be asked to park and enter the building to sign out your child with identification. If you need a placard please contact the school secretary and one will be provided to you. 
  • Students will enter cars from the sidewalk and enter cars on the passenger side only. 
  • DO NOT PASS cars in line at drop off. Please wait until the car in front of you moves forward.

NAPAC 
NAPAC is conducting several surveys this year to gather parents' feedback on special education issues in North Andover. We need your input! If you have a child on an IEP or 504 plan, please take our short survey. All responses are confidential.

Sargent Lost and Found
Please remember to check Sargent's Lost and Found, which is located just outside of our cafeteria.  It is already quite full and we are out of hangers!  There are over 100 unlabeled coats and jackets currently in the Lost and Found, which means there is a 20% chance that something belongs to your family! We make every attempt to get items in the Lost and Found back to their owners, but anything that has been there more than 3 weeks will be donated!

Understanding Our Differences
UOD reinforces our RAISE values, increases tolerance, reduces bullying and fosters respect, acceptance and compassion for people of all abilities. The curriculum covers autism, physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and chronic medical conditions such as allergies, asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy. Detailed information on each unit will be sent to parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students prior to the day of the event and is also available on the UOD website.

The UOD program is presented by parent volunteers, and volunteers are needed at all North Andover schools! This is an excellent opportunity to share time in the classroom with your own child or to get to know other parents and students, and it encourages friendship and empathy for people with disabilities in our community. You can volunteer at ANY school in town- it does not have to be the school your child attends! Questions and additional information regarding volunteering for UOD can be directed to UODofNA@gmail.com. No experience with disabilities is necessary! All training takes place online and can be completed in under twenty minutes. Thank you so much for your support of this exciting program!

Bay State Textile Bin 
Are you in the process of a back-to-school closet clean out?  There is a white Bay State Textile bin located in the Sargent parking lot to collect household items that may otherwise be discarded, lugged to another bin, or put out on the curb. Please consider donating your items into this bin!  The contributions are weighed and Bay State Textiles sends a rebate check monthly to the school based on the weight of the donation.  Help support our school while also cleaning house! Click here for more information on Bay State Textiles.  Their flyer for North Andover schools can be found here.

North Andover Food Rescue 
The Food Rescue is up and running smoothly for the 2018-2019 school year.!  They have added the new ABECC to their rotation, meaning they now rescue food at every public school in North Andover!  They could really use your help!  The North Andover Food Rescue is looking for volunteers to help collect and distribute uneaten, unopened food from the Sargent cafeteria- a shift of only 20 minutes can make a huge difference for many people in our community! To sign up for a shift, please click here. North Andover Schools Enrichment Council 
NORTH ANDOVER SCHOOLS ENRICHMENT COUNCIL is a volunteer-run, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Founded in 1986, their mission is to support, strengthen and enrich the North Andover school curriculum by providing in-school cultural and educational programs in the Sciences and Humanities.  North Andover Schools Enrichment Council (NASEC) is supported by North Andover PTOs, grants, and generous private donations.  It is comprised of representatives from each of the five elementary schools and the middle school.  Our Sargent Elementary NASEC representative is Robyn Delaney, and she can be reached at delaneyrobyn@gmail.comTo find out more information about NASEC, visit their website or check them out on Facebook too!

North Andover Foundation for Education
The purpose of the North Andover Foundation for Education (NAFE) is to provide the public schools of North Andover with the resources necessary to enhance curriculum, programs, and services beyond those that are supported in the annual budget.  It is the goal of the foundation is to provide additional educational opportunities for students and teachers to support the North Andover Public Schools in cultivating a community of engaged learners, insightful thinkers, and effective communicators.

Marker Recycling
All around Sargent, students and teachers will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more! Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. Drop-off boxes will be located in the art room and outside the cafeteria for your child to deposit the markers. Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year. Remember, don’t throw out that used marker— ColorCycle it!
